Doctor Who Confidential - Inspiring Young Minds

@SaveDWC

After yesterdays airing of possibly the last episode of Doctor Who Confidential, we caught up with the campaigner who wants to keep the series running strong and tells us why Doctor Who Confidential is such an inspirational show:

Firstly, how big has the SaveDWC Twitter account and the petition become since you started the campaign?
How big has SaveDWC got. Well, within the first 24 hours we had over 5,000 followers follow us which knocked me and many other people off their feet, it's grown to just over 7,000 Followers as of 13:17pm on October 1st which I think is really great. It's a MASSIVE day for DWC and the Campaign so we really hope as many more people can be made aware of the Campaign today and the more support the better.

How do you think this campaign will show that Doctor Who Confidential is a vital show for the BBC?
This Campaign will show that DWC is a vital show because as we say "Power to the people". What we are actually saying is "Power to the Viewer". Every person who signs the Petition and every person who follows on Twitter shows how many people disagree with the decision and in our view the biggest mistake you can make in TV is make an unpopular decision that goes against what your viewers want. At the end of the day, it's the viewer who make or break shows by tuning in.
How important do you think Doctor Who Confidential is to the 'Doctor Who world'?
Losing DWC in the "Doctor Who World" is actually more of a blow than you think. If you think about it, well, let's take for example, my family. They are not huge Doctor Who fans, but if they want to watch an episode and catch up on what the story is all about (i.e.) The River Song Story, then DWC really helps viewers like these out by keeping them up to scratch. Basically, it may end up that Doctor Who by itself may seem too confusing for casual viewers and they might eventually get fed up of it and switch off, which is very bad news. It may not happen next year, the notice in a drop, but certainly the year after that the loss of DWC will be felt in terms of viewing figures for Doctor Who alone. Oh, and one more think, Doctor Who celebrates it's Fiftieth Anniversary soon, a lot of viewers are really disappointed they won't get a Confidential for the Fiftieth. It's just sad news really.

How different is Doctor Who Confidential from any other programme?
Doctor Who Confidential is different from any other programme as it is a show about a TV show. But then it's so much more than that because it's educational and fun for the kids to watch. More importantly, it's inspiring to them. We've had a lot of people come to us and say it's inspired me to make a decision on what course I want to do at college because I didn't know what the world of television was like.

Discontinuing a show unique and as inspirational is a really sad thought. In last nights final episode it shows the DWC Script to Screen for the schools and I found it a little hard to watch because I just thought, these kids are having such a good time and they are learning about how an episode is made, why deny kids that? I would have loved to have been given that opportunity at that age.

What would our television screens be like without Doctor Who Confidential?
What would our TV Screens be like? Well, if you go on what BBC Three have lined up you can fill your boots with repeats of shows from BBC One. So, TV Screens will be very easy to turn off for me. If I want repeats, I go to BBC iPlayer.

What changes could be made to the show to ensure it's safety?
The changes that clearly need to be made is for DWC to stop wasting time filming the actors bouncing on trampolines and racing cars and swimming with sharks. There's no need for it to be 45 minutes long, cut it down to between 15-30 minutes and you'll not need to pad things out. I'd say concentrate on showing how the show is put together and the different challenges that face the team each episode.

Finally, how has Doctor Who Confidential inspired you?
Doctor Who Confidential inspired me to really fight for this show as it does so much for the kids really. That's the main reason we are campaigning here. I'm pretty sure there's not many kids that are very young who are on Twitter and perhaps if we had them know and join the campaign I think they would strongly agree the show needs to be saved. For their benefit more than just the "Whovian's" benefit.

We would like to thank the @SaveDWC Campaigner (Who would like to remain anonymous) for taking their time to answer these questions,

The Weekly Agenda - A Mid-Series Finale Every Year?

After a weeks break in the Doctor Who Bar, The Weekly Agenda is back!

For those who don't know The Weekly Agenda will be asking you a particular question at the beginning of every week and we want your feedback by the end of the week so we can show what each and everyone of you think. In addition our team members will also be expressing their view on the subject. So what is this weeks question?

Should there be a Mid-Series Finale Every Year?

Ellis (@APoliceBox) Says:
After The Mid-Series Finale, A Good Man Goes To War on the 4th June 2011, I think it can be a good idea to run a mid-series finale every year. When Steven Moffat announced that the first 7 episodes will be transmitted in Spring and the remaining 6 in the Autumn, I was very pleased that we would see more Doctor Who over the year and not be waiting 6+ months for the Christmas Special. Now that the first 7 episodes have been transmitted, I do admit I am missing Doctor Who already but I do feel better knowing that there is more to come.  As well as Torchwood and the remaining Sarah Jane Adventures stories. But I do also wonder whether a Mid-series finale would work every year as a Cliffhanger at the end of episode 7 is the only road to go down. My favourite idea would be to have two separate series. One in the Spring and one in the Autumn but with something at the end to keep us waiting and teasing till the next series.

We really want to hear your opinion on this Weekly Agenda, especially as it's the second one. Even if it's one itsy bitsy sentence or a big paragraph we still want you to express your thoughts so we can show the world what we all think.

The Weekly Agenda - Results - Is Doctor Who Getting too Confusing?

Last week we launched our new discussion feature, The Weekly Agenda, where we give you a particular Doctor Who subject question, give our own opinion and then get you to send us your comments and views towards it.

You sent us a bunch of comments over Twitter and on our comment box which you can see below:

Twitter:

@Deborahhasselt: In my opinion is too confusing at the moment. We are not all intellectual geniuses! Preferred it better when RTD (Russel T Davies) was in charge, he could reign Moffat's imagination in. Girl in the Fireplace best eg.

@Team_Hotch: Not to confusing. Just catering for a wider range of fans. Breaking the childrens stereotype and indulging its older fans.

@Amy_Jadiee: I don't think it's getting too confusing, its just the right level of confusion.

@TheDiogenes: Doctor Who, too confusing? Not for us Sherlockians, we have big brains.

Comments:

Joshua:
I think people shouldn't complain about confusion. Confusion leads to speculation and the show gets talked about. This is event television and has to be seen out until the end. It is all part of the plan to make fans confused because when it all comes together and makes sense it will feel more important.

Mark Coale:
would say it has become, under Moffat, "pay attention television," where you cannot be a passive viewer. You need to watch carefully, maybe even twice, to get everything.

TodayI'mNoel:
have to admit that I've heard a few people talk about confusing and getting lost, but I don't get the confusion. Does that mean I'm not as taken in by everything so don't find myself confused? I agree that what Moffat has brought more is 'talkaboutability'. Everyone is talking about Amy's pregnancy and the story arc their own theories.

Missile Panda:
Agree with the comments above, I don't think it's confusing but you do need to pay attention. I wonder how Doctor Who's younger viewers are finding the twists and turns of this series?

danjam:
When I was a very young viewer I didn't make much sense of the story anyway. There were monsters and they had to be defeated and you can still get that. I think it's brilliant if short attention spans are being challenged and Doctor Who is getting more sophisticated - then children have to work at it and it's good for their minds!  Ideally perhaps it should be like a graphic novel that kids can still watch.

Dalek Thay:
Have ALWAYS been HEADY CONCEPTS in DOCTOR WHO. HUMAN CHILDREN cannot be EXPECTED to UNDERSTAND all of it. But as LONG as there are MONSTERS to FIGHT and the CLEVER DALEKS conquer...er.... the CLEVER DOCTOR wins the DAY, then CHILDREN will ENJOY it.

On a BROADER scope, TELEVISION and MOVIES lately seem to be PUSHING the IDEA that you MUST have a lot of TWISTS and TURNS in your PLOT for it to be ENTERTAINING. This is TRUE to an EXTENT, but on the same line, you can PAINT yourself into a CORNER in a LONG RUNNING TELEVISION SHOW.

I will make the EXAMPLE of the U.S. Series 'The X-Files'. It is SIMILAR to DOCTOR WHO in many REGARDS. Its WRITER/EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, Chris Carter, was widely PRAISED for his ABILITY to create TWISTS and TURNS that kept the AUDIENCE GUESSING. In the END, though, his ANSWERS were not nearly GOOD ENOUGH for the QUESTIONS he'd POSED, and the SERIES fell APART.

My PRIMARY CONCERN with DOCTOR WHO at the moment is the character of RIVER SONG. Brilliant IDEA, but it remains to be SEEN how it is fully EXECUTED. I have ALREADY detected HOLES and GAPS that do not RECONCILE with what we KNOW, having SEEN her FUTURE already. I hope MOFFAT is not in over his HEAD with this. If his EXPLANATION of her is not SATISFACTORY for AUDIENCES, it could spell DISASTER for the SERIES. Not as much of a DISASTER as the COLIN BAKER YEARS, but that is another POST.

Thank you to all who contributed to the very first Weekly Agenda in the Doctor Who Bar. We will have the next Agenda question later on today!

The Weekly Agenda - Is Doctor Who Getting Too Confusing?

Here in the 'Bar' we came up with an idea that would get everyone talking and discussing Doctor Who between sessions so that we are always active.

The Weekly Agenda will be asking you a particular question at the beginning of every week and we want your feedback by the end of the week so we can show what each and everyone of you think. In addition our team members will also be expressing their view on the subject. So what is this weeks question?

Is Doctor Who getting Too Confusing?

Ellis (@APoliceBox) Says:
I don't think Doctor Who is becoming too confusing. I believe that this series in particular has stepped up a level and is so much different from any other series of Doctor Who that has gone before. I think that to understand something you have to believe in it, trust in it and have faith in it. From the second episode, Day of The Moon, I can say I did have my doubts about where it was going and if this would  all makes sense. But watching something like Doctor Who Confidential, you see how much work and effort the Cast and Crew put into this series and how much they want people to see these stories. So with that I think that Doctor Who isn't becoming too confusing, you just need to be there till the end and see how it all pans out.

We really want to hear your opinion on this Weekly Agenda, especially as it's the First one. Even if it's one itsy bitsy sentence or a big paragraph we still want you to express your thoughts so we can show the world what we all think.

Putting the 'Bar' in the Doctor Who Bar - Part 1

Now that the Doctor Who Bar has been running for a couple of months, we thought it would be wise to put a bit of the 'Bar' in to the Doctor Who Bar.

You probably know this already but the Doctor Who Bar was first set up to give you more enjoyment from the Classic and New Series of Doctor Who. Originally two of our members started talking on Twitter, over a few beers, about Doctor Who and wanting to watch it whilst tweeting about it on Twitter! Doctor Who is a particular subject which crops up everywhere not just in pubs and bars but everywhere else really - and that is where the Doctor Who Bar began.

So in this first part, were showing you how to make your very own Sonic Screwdriver Cocktail!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 oz Vanilla Vodka

1 1/2 oz Blue Curacao

6 oz Clear Lemon & Lime Soda

  1. Firstly half-fill a 12 oz clear glass with ice.
  2. Then pour your 1 1/2 oz of Vodka in, followed by your 1 1/2 of Blue Curacao and your 6 oz of Clear Lemon & Lime Soda (lemonade or limeade here in England)
  3. Top it of with a Parasol or a Doctor Who related object and then you have your very own Sonic Screwdriver Cocktail to enjoy whilst watching your favourite Timelord!

NB Please note the Doctor Who Bar will not be held liable for any hangovers induced by drinking this cocktail!!
With thanks to Dirty whoers

Join us next time in Putting the 'Bar' in the Doctor Who Bar, when we will be looking at what drinks have been featured and mentions in Doctor Who episodes.

This Weeks DoctorWhoBar Story is... Vengeance on Varos!

We can reveal that today's Sixth Session (16/04/2011) Story will be the Sixth Doctor's third story,
Vengeance on Varos!

Varos took the lead in our online Poll after being behind Revelation of the Daleks. Only this morning
did all things change!

Varos took top spot with 36 votes while Revelation came in second with 26 votes. As you can see Varos had a surge of votes to overtake the Dalek story and therefore became this weeks winner!

Vengeance on Varos transmitted in two 45 minute episodes on 19th January 1985 and 26th January 1985. The season 22 story stars Colin Baker as the Sixth Door and Nicola Bryant as Peri Brown.

"After the TARDIS depletes its supply of Zeiton-7 ore, the Sixth Doctor and Peri are forced to land on the planet of Varos in search of more. But the Colony is a former prison and the current society lives off entertainment from torture and execution. And the Doctor might be next on the list."

Vengeance on Varos wasn't too popular in the Doctor Who Magazine 'The Mighty 200' Poll as it only got to 124 in the vote.

So if you have the DVD stacked on your shelf, the classic VHS tucked away in a box then be prepared for 7-30pm GMT. Have a drink and some food and get ready to join in with the @DoctorWhoBar from 7pm GMT.

You Last Chance to Vote!

It's Saturday and you know what Saturdays mean... The Doctor Who Bar Sessions!

This week as it's our Sixth Session here in the "Bar" and it's just a week till Series 6 (Yes 7 Days!) we thought we add up the sixes and watch a sixth Doctor story!

Revelation of the Daleks was slightly in the lead for the past couple of days, but now only hours before the Poll closes we have had a surge of votes for The Sixth Doctor's third Story, Vengeance on Varos.

At the Time of writing, with 30 minutes to go, Vengeance has 34 Votes with Revelation of the Daleks coming in with second with 28 votes.

The less popular stories this week seem to be The Mysterious Planet, Mindwarp and The Ultimate Foe which look like there isn't a chance of us watching this week.

So will Vengeance on Varos lead the way or will Revelation of the Daleks climb to first place?

There's only one way to find out, and that is to cast your vote.

So please vote for your favourite as there isn't long until the poll closes!

Sixth Doctor - Sixth Session - Series Six

To Celebrate Series 6 and our Sixth Session here in the Doctor Who Bar, we thought it would be a good idea to add up the sixes and put together some Sixth Doctor Favourites to watch this Saturday from 7pm GMT.

Played by Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor was a different type of portrayal of the character we were used to! You will discover later what Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor meant to one of our Doctor Who Bar members, David:

"Colin's portrayal was less sympathetic than other incarnations to begin with, he was much more of an outsider and a rebel, he didn't suffer fools either! Shades of the William Hartnell characterisation!"

You will be able to see that post later on today.

We have 11 great stories on our poll for you to vote for your favourite, the stories are:

The Twin Dilemma
Attack of the Cybermen
Venegeance on Varos
The Mark of the Rani
The Two Doctors
Timelash
Revelation of the Daleks
The Mysterious Planet
Mindwarp
Terror of the Vervoids
The Ultimate Foe

So get voting for you favourite Sixth Doctor story as next week will be our last Classic Who before the New Series 6 Launch Party!

Remembering Nicholas - A DoctorWhoBar Special

The next Doctor Who Bar Session will be a very special one for all of us. 'Remembering Nicholas' celebrates the life and work of the wonderful Nicholas Courtney who sadly passed away on 22nd February this year. Nicholas played the recurring character of Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart in over 100 episodes of Doctor Who.

'Five Rounds Rapid' was probably The Brigadier's most famous line in the series as the Head of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, whose job it was to protect the Earth from alien attack.

'Of all the characters in Doctor Who there is no doubt he was
the most loved by the fans for his wonderful portrayal of the rather
pompous Brigadier.'

This was brilliantly said by close friend and fellow Doctor Who star Tom
Baker after hearing the news of Mr. Courtneys sad passing.

So to celebrate the character played by Nicholas Courtney we bring you
another Doctor Who Bar Special - Remembering Nicholas.
Over the next week we'll be bringing you our favourite memories of
Nicholas, some Special Tributes and lots more.

On Saturday (9th April) we will be watching one 'Brig' story to celebrate
his commitment to Doctor Who and to show what a great actor and person he was.

So please give us your 'Brig' story suggestions from episodes of the series, to the recent Sarah Jane Adventures episode, The Enemy of the Bane. we will be making a list of your comments and then putting them into a Poll soon.

This Weeks DoctorWhoBar Story is... Pyramids of Mars!

We can reveal that Today's Story (02/04/2011) in the fourth Doctor Who Bar session will be the perennial Tom Baker favourite, Pyramids of Mars!
'Pyramids' took the lead on our online Voting Poll with 68 votes with Genesis of the Daleks coming in Second, and not far behind, with 60 Votes!!
Pyramids of Mars was broadcast in four 25 minutes episodes from 25th October – 15th November 1975.
The Season 13 Story stars Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith.
Going off course, the TARDIS materializes inside a Victorian gothic Mansion. The Doctor and Sarah quickly realize that something is very wrong. The owner is missing and the Estate has fallen under the control of a mysterious Egyptian. Cloth-wrapped Mummies rise up and roam the grounds, killing anyone in their path!

A dangerous alien power is at work, and the Doctor recognizes the mastermind of all this as Sutekh the Destroyer, the last of the Osirians. The Doctor must stop the ruthless Sutekh at all costs, or there may not be a future for them to return to!

'Pyramids' was voted 7th in the Doctor Who Magazine Poll 'The Mighty 200' so it promises to be one of the best Doctor Who episodes in the entirhistory of Doctor Who....
If you have the DVD stacked on your shelf, the classic VHS tucked away in a box, or even if you can watch online on sites like Seesaw etc. then be prepared for 7-30pm (GMT. Have a drink and some food and get ready to join in with the @DoctorWhoBar from 7pm (GMT).
